Hungry in Hong Kong

I have just got back from a month long holiday, taking in Hong Kong (and briefly, Macau), Sydney, Melbourne, Bangkok and Koh Lanta. Needless to say, a lot of eating and drinking went on in all of these places, not least because each of these cities has fantastic food! These are just a few of my highlights for Hong Kong:

1. Maxim’s at City Palace

Go for the Dim Sum and the sight of waitresses pushing heaving trolleys of bamboo baskets from table to table, hawking deliciousness. The Dim Sum was amongst the best I have tasted, and so it should be, in Hong Kong. I also loved the novelty of flagging down a waitress (and don’t be shy, as otherwise they just push on past you!) to select my food. I recommend the pork buns in particular.

Address: City Hall, Connaught Road, Central

2. Spring Deer

I am reliably informed that this is an absolute must for the famous Peking Duck. Sadly however on our visit, we were turned away as the restaurant was full (sufficient testament to its following I think!) We will return.

Address: 1 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui (East Tsim Sha Tsui Station)

3. Aqua

Aqua is both a bar and a restaurant. We came here for the amazing view over Hong Kong’s famous skyline. The cocktail menu is also long and comprehensive and on our visit we snagged a table right by the window.

Address: 1 Peking Road (Tsim Sha Tsui)

4. Club Militar de Macau

Colonial charm oozes from this pink verrandah’d building in Macau Town. Well-executed Portugeuse cuisine, in particular the fish dishes and desserts.

Address: Avenida de Praia Grande 975, Macau
